Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives£ºThe purpose of this study was to demonstrate and compare the psychiatric symptom profiles of the homeless people of street and shelter.
Method£º The subjects were 538 street homeless people from Seoul and Yeongdeungpo station and 1,076 homeless people who stay 58 shelters in Seoul city. The structured questionnaire for socio-demographic information and BSI (Brief Symptom Inventory) were filled up.
Results£º The T scores of homeless people were above the normative score. All the scores of 9 dimensions and Global Severity Index(GSI) were higher in street than shelter, and it was statistically significant (p=0.000). 64.1% of subjects were classified as a group who need psychiatric assessment and treatment intervention.
Conclusion£º This study shows the significance of mental health problems of homeless people. To solve this, we need more structured and comprehensive mental health delivery system for street people and should strengthen and reform the function of shelter not only for accommodation but also for primary health care as a component of whole delivery system.
